Shopify SEO field audit

Audit Shopify SEO titles and meta descriptions across every product.

Find blank, unusually short or long, and duplicated product search-listing fields — then improve the catalog with factual, product-specific metadata instead of treating character count as an SEO score.

StoreCheck audits product catalog fields. It does not claim that a title length, description length, or health score guarantees search rankings or exact search-result snippets.

Eight field-level rules

Check presence, review length, and find duplicated metadata.

seo.missing-titleMedium

Missing SEO title

The explicit Shopify SEO title field is empty.

seo.title-too-shortLow

SEO title very short

Non-empty title is below StoreCheck's 30-character review threshold.

seo.title-too-longLow

SEO title long

Title is above StoreCheck's 60-character review threshold.

seo.duplicate-titleMedium

Duplicate SEO title

Multiple products use the same normalized explicit SEO title.

seo.missing-descriptionMedium

Missing meta description

The explicit Shopify SEO description field is empty.

seo.description-too-shortLow

Meta description very short

Non-empty description is below StoreCheck's 70-character review threshold.

seo.description-too-longLow

Meta description long

Description is above StoreCheck's 160-character review threshold.

seo.duplicate-descriptionMedium

Duplicate meta description

Multiple products use the same normalized explicit meta description.

Thresholds with context

Use character counts to trigger review, not to predict Google.

StoreCheck reviews SEO titles outside 30–60 characters and meta descriptions outside 70–160. Shopify recommends titles of roughly 60 characters or fewer and meta descriptions around 160. Search engines can still truncate, replace, or rewrite displayed text.

Review priorities

Make the field useful before making it fit a range.

Unique before clever

A specific title or description that distinguishes one product is more useful than repeating the same optimized-looking template everywhere.

Readable before keyword-heavy

Shopify recommends natural, readable wording. StoreCheck does not reward keyword stuffing or claim that a target character count guarantees rankings.

Search previews are not deterministic

Search engines can shorten, replace, or rewrite titles and snippets. Character thresholds help review catalog fields; they do not control the final SERP display.

Five-step remediation

Scan, prioritize, write, verify.

01

Scan explicit product SEO fields across the catalog

Use a Shopify CSV or a connected read-only scan so missing and duplicated search-listing fields are reviewed across all products rather than one product at a time.

02

Fix missing and duplicate fields before chasing character counts

A missing or duplicated product-specific field is usually a clearer content-quality problem than being a few characters outside a review range. Prioritize identity and usefulness first.

03

Use length as a review aid, not a ranking formula

StoreCheck reviews titles at 30–60 characters and descriptions at 70–160. Shopify recommends titles around 60 characters or fewer and meta descriptions around 160, but search engines can truncate or rewrite what they display.

04

Keep each field factual and product-specific

Use only product facts you can support. Avoid keyword lists, invented certifications, made-up specifications, prices that can change, or generic copy repeated across many products.

05

Rescan after editing

Verify that missing, duplicate, and obvious length-review findings are resolved without introducing a new duplicate field or replacing factual metadata with unsupported marketing claims.

AI-assisted metadata stays source-bound.

StoreCheck's Pro AI Fix Pack marks all eight SEO title/description findings as safe for assisted CSV editing, but acceptance criteria require product-specific facts from the source catalog, uniqueness, configured length limits, and no invented certifications, specifications, claims, prices, or brand facts. The pack is a review/download workflow; connected Shopify scans remain read-only.

SEO title and meta-description questions

Keep the audit scope honest.

Are 30–60 and 70–160 Google ranking rules?

No. They are StoreCheck review thresholds. Shopify recommends page titles around 60 characters or fewer and meta descriptions around 160, but search engines can truncate or rewrite search-result titles and snippets. StoreCheck uses its minimum thresholds to surface unusually sparse product metadata, not to promise ranking gains.

Does a blank Shopify SEO title mean the product has no title in search?

Not necessarily. StoreCheck's missing-title finding means the explicit Shopify SEO title field is blank. Shopify can use other product data and search engines can choose or rewrite displayed title text. The finding is about merchant control over the explicit field, not a guarantee about what a search engine will show.

How does StoreCheck decide that SEO metadata is duplicated?

StoreCheck groups non-empty explicit SEO titles or descriptions by normalized text, so casing, Unicode normalization, punctuation, and repeated whitespace do not hide substantially identical metadata across different products.

Can StoreCheck automatically write SEO titles and descriptions to Shopify?

No. Connected audits are read-only. On Pro, the AI Fix Pack classifies the eight SEO title/description rules as safe assisted CSV-edit categories under strict factual and length acceptance criteria, but StoreCheck does not silently write those changes to a connected store.

Does StoreCheck audit all Shopify SEO?

No. This guide and these rules focus on product SEO title and description catalog fields. StoreCheck does not claim that these rules audit backlinks, Core Web Vitals, theme code, crawling, indexing, schema implementation, or every technical SEO signal.

Audit product search-listing fields

Find missing, duplicate, and suspiciously thin or long Shopify SEO fields across the catalog — then improve them with factual product copy.
